11 vendors to offer cloud computing services under GSA contract

Agencies will soon have access to data storage, computing power, web hosting and other cloud computing services under a new General Services Administration contract.

GSA announced yesterday that it awarded 11 vendors positions on the contract, which will provide cloud-based infrastructure as a service. The services will be offered through Apps.gov — an online portal where agencies can access computing services on demand.

The new offerings are expected to offset the tens of billions of dollars the government spends on information technology products and services each year, and agencies can use or discontinue the products as needed.

"These new cloud infrastructure offerings can be a way for agencies to realize cost savings, efficiencies and modernization without having to expend capital resources expanding their existing infrastructure," a GSA news release says.
