Defense Department Creates Robot That Outruns Olympian Usain Bolt

I wouldn't want to try to out run this, would you

Department of Defense can now run faster than Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt.

The Cheetah robot – developed by the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency – broke its own land speed record of 18 mph Wednesday by going 28.3 mph in a 20-meter split.

Bolt, who set the world record in the 100 meters with a 9.58 run in 2009, reached a peak speed of 27.78 mph during a 20-meter split in the World Athletics Championship.

The video posted by DARPA on its website shows the Cheetah robot hitting the new “world-record” mark before losing

Where does the money come from to fund all of this?
Why commerce of course.
The electronic transfer of digits that hold no monetary value what so ever.

Space agency officials confirmed feasability studies were under way to asses whether astronauts could be permanently sent to the red planet, or its moons, to establish human colonies.

The multi-billion pound mission, titled Hundred Years Starship, is being spearheaded by the Ames Research Centre, one of Nasa’s main research centres, based in Moffett Field, California.

Officials from the Pentagon's Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) are also heavily involved in turning the science fiction idea into a reality.

Boeing gets $89M to build unmanned aircraft that can stay aloft for 5 years

http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/66394

Oh look, product development for a little more CONSUMER debt, specifically developed for future sales by the United States Defense Department to be paid for by the taxpayers of every country that buys one to further their defences regarding the "War on Terror"
The "War on Terror" has been an exceptionally lucrative money maker due to the fear level index rise, after the initiation of 9/11.
Fear is the greatest psycological sell of all times.

One of the more unique unmanned aircraft took a giant step toward reality this week when the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) inked an agreement with Boeing to build the SolarEagle, a plane capable of remaining at heights over 60,000ft for over five years.

Boeing says the first SolarEagle under the $89 million contract could fly as early as 2014.

12 mad science projects that could shake the world

The SolarEagle is built under DARPA's Vulture program. The idea is to build a single aircraft that could support traditional intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance functions over country-sized areas - while at the same time providing an unblinking eye over a critical target, monitoring that target night and day, day in and day out, month after month - providing unprecedented high-value intelligence. Vulture aircraft will also be able to provide communications capabilities available today only from geostationary satellites - offering opportunities for new, more flexible, expandable and relocatable communication architectures at a fraction of the cost of dedicated satellite capabilities. The challenges with Vulture include developing solar cell, energy storage, and reliability technologies that will allow the aircraft to operate continuously, unrefueled for over 44,000 hours, DARPA stated.

Under the Vulture II agreement, Boeing will develop a full-scale flight demonstrator, including maturation of the critical power system and structures technologies. Key suppliers for the program include Versa Power Systems and QinetiQ.

Hypersonic Test Vehicle Falcon goes missing on test flight, DARPA admits

Is there even any point in asking how much this little failure cost?

THE US has admitted its top-secret military prototype "Falcon" glider went missing on its test flight last week.
US military scientists lost contact with the unmanned Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2 (HTV-2) nine minutes into its inaugural test flight, AFP reported.

The HTV-2 was launched last week aboard a Minotaur IV rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, according to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

The HTV-2 is designed to fly through the upper reaches of Earth's atmosphere at speeds of up to Mach 20, providing the US military with a possible platform for striking targets anywhere on the planet with conventional weapons.

The test flight called for a 30-minute mission in which the vehicle would glide at high speed before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean, north of a US military test site at the Kwajalein Atoll.

The glider separated from the booster but soon after the signal vanished, a spokeswoman said.

"Preliminary review of data indicates the HTV-2 achieved controlled flight within the atmosphere at over Mach 20. Then contact with HTV-2 was lost," Johanna Spangenberg Jones, a spokeswoman for DARPA, said.

"This was our first flight (all others were done in wind tunnels and simulations) so although of course we would like to have everything go perfectly, we still gathered data and can use findings for the next flight, scheduled currently for early 2011," she said.

The Pentagon’s mad science arm

http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2010/02/pentagon-looks-to-breed-immortal-synthetic-organisms-molecular-kill-switch-included/

A kill switch, and what happens if it somehow breeds with something that doesn't have a kill switch
Shit happens, think about it
And in keeping with the tax payer bitch and the rapidly growing pace of our National debt, I ask the question: Is this a want or a need? Because "WE" can't afford anymore wants on a whim

The Pentagon’s mad science arm may have come up with its most radical project yet. Darpa is looking to re-write the laws of evolution to the military’s advantage, creating “synthetic organisms” that can live forever — or can be killed with the flick of a molecular switch.

As part of its budget for the next year, Darpa is investing $6 million into a project called BioDesign, with the goal of eliminating “the randomness of natural evolutionary advancement.” The plan would assemble the latest bio-tech knowledge to come up with living, breathing creatures that are genetically engineered to “produce the intended biological effect.” Darpa wants the organisms to be fortified with molecules that bolster cell resistance to death, so that the lab-monsters can “ultimately be programmed to live indefinitely.”

Of course, Darpa’s got to prevent the super-species from being swayed to do enemy work — so they’ll encode loyalty right into DNA, by developing genetically programmed locks to create “tamper proof” cells. Plus, the synthetic organism will be traceable, using some kind of DNA manipulation, “similar to a serial number on a handgun.” And if that doesn’t work, don’t worry. In case Darpa’s plan somehow goes horribly awry, they’re also tossing in a last-resort, genetically-coded kill switch:
