'Don't Tread On Me' flag has long history of Navy use

The Navy's new working uniform features a version of a flag with a rattlesnake and the phrase the "Don't Tread on Me" on the left shoulder.

But the First Navy Jack is similar to the Rattlesnake Jack and Gadsden flag, which has been labeled by some as a controversial symbol co-opted by the far-right.

"The rattlesnake emerged as a symbol of the English colonies of North America about the time of the Seven Years War, when it appeared in newspaper prints with the motto 'Join or Die,'" according to the Navy.

"By the time of the War of Independence, the rattlesnake, frequently used in conjunction with the motto 'Don't Tread on Me,' was a common symbol for the United States, its independent spirit, and its resistance to tyranny."

Bard Cosman, an expert on the Gadsden flag, believes it may even have its origins with Moses in the Old Testament. The first modern use of the yellow flag, designed by Col. Christopher Gadsden of South Carolina in 1775, was by Commodore Esek Hopkins. The commander of the Continental Navy Fleet used it as his personal battle standard in 1776. The red-and-white-striped Navy Jack would go on to be used by various Revolutionary-era military forces.

"It's been a symbol of liberty and defiance ever since," Cosman told the Washington Examiner.

The company also acknowledged it had intentionally increased the pressure on a dozen pipelines temporarily, in some cases going above the limit "by a few pounds."

Wells Fargo is paying $24 million to end an investigation by eight states probing whether lenders acquired by the company made risky mortgages to consumers without disclosing their perils.

The states said loans known as option adjustable rate loans, or "pick-a-payment" mortgages, were deceptive to borrowers. Those particularly toxic loans allowed borrowers to defer some of their interest payments and add them to the principal balance. Borrowers could make payments so low that loan debt actually increased every month.

San Francisco-based Wells Fargo & Co. announced the agreement Wednesday with attorneys general in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, Texas and Washington state.

The loans were made by Wachovia Corp. and a California company it acquired, World Savings Bank. Wells purchased Wachovia at the end of 2008. Wachovia had already stopped making those loans before the acquisition was complete. ye

As part of the agreement, Wells has agreed to offer loan assistance worth more than $770 million to more than 8,700 borrowers through June 2013, though that amount will depend on how the economy fares during that time. The $24 million will be used to help states reach out to customers who took out such loans.

The agreement includes no admission of wrongdoing by Wells Fargo.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott has ordered a freeze on all foreclosures across the state after a case in Massachusetts exposed a process called 'robo-signing,' where employees with Bank of America signed thousands of foreclosure documents without reading and reviewing them first.

One Bank of America worker admitted to signing between 7,000 and 8,000 documents per month without even looking at them, simply because there were too many to review. This move brings the accuracy of the foreclosure process into question.

"The faulty paperwork is a symptom of a larger problem," said Kathleen Engel with Suffolk University Law School in Boston. "That larger problem is that money flew fast, the paperwork didn't, and all that mattered was the bottom line."

These mounting concerns have forced some states to get involved, including Texas, which has demanded that 27 loan servicing companies suspend all foreclosure activities until mid-October. Abbott also wants companies to identify employees who participated in the 'robo-signing' process

Why do we have 63 offices for ICE in 44 countries? We can't even get our own shit together concerning the problems of illegal alien infiltration costs in our own country, without the added additional burdens of trying to pay to govern the same problem in 44 other countries.

Also, the agency will send ICE lawyers to U.S. attorneys offices to help prosecute felons who illegally re-enter the country after deportation. It also will increase the number of ICE agents in Mexico to 40, making it ICE's largest office among 63 offices in 44 countries.

As head of the Texas Nationalist Movement, Daniel Miller of Nederland believes it’s time for the Lone Star State to sever its bond with the United States and return to the days when Texas was an independent republic.

"Independence. In our lifetime," Miller’s organization proclaims on its Web site.

When Gov. Rick Perry suggested that some Texans might want to secede from the Union because they are fed up with the federal government, the remarks drew nationwide news coverage and became fodder for late-night comedians.

But to Texas separatists like Miller and Republican gubernatorial candidate Larry Kilgore of Mansfield, secession is no laughing matter. Nor is it exclusive to the nation’s second-largest state.

Fanned by angry contempt for Washington, secession movements have sprouted up in perhaps more than a dozen states in recent years. In Vermont, retired economics professor Thomas Naylor leads the Second Vermont Republic, a self-styled citizens network dedicated to extracting the sparsely populated New England state from "the American Empire."

And on the other side of the continent, Northwestern separatists envision a "Republic of Cascadia" carved out of Oregon, Washington and the Canadian province of British Columbia
