Toxic Sludge Floods Several Hungarian Towns

Heavy metals are extremely toxic.

The Hungarian government declared a state of emergency in several towns in the southwest of the country on Tuesday, a day after a sludge reservoir at an aluminum production plant burst its banks. At least four people were killed and more than 120 were injured, government officials said.

“People here speak of a mini tsunami,” said Gyorgy Bakos, spokesman for the National Disaster Management Directorate, who was close to the scene of the accident.

The local authorities and emergency services moved quickly to evacuate residents from Kolontar, Devecser and Somlovasarhely and set up makeshift camps

The sludge, a waste product in aluminum production, contains heavy metals and is toxic if ingested.

But the company, MAL Rt, issued a statement Tuesday afternoon saying that “the red sludge waste is not considered hazardous waste according to E.U. standards
